"Three Heads Are Better Than One: An Author, an Editor and an Illustrator Collaborate Together" by Kate Narita

I know, I know. The idiom is “two heads are better than one,” not “three heads are better than one.” But in this case, I cannot imagine 100 Bugs! A Counting Book existing without the editor, Janine O’Malley or the illustrator, Suzanne Kaufman. If you read this blog post https://epiceighteen.weebly.com/blog/100-bugs-a-counting-book-from-manuscript-to-book-by-kate-narita you can read about how the manuscript morphed into 100 Bugs! over time as a result of collaborating with Janine and Suzanne. Today, I’m going to highlight aspects of our collaboration that I didn’t cover in the Manuscript to Book post.

First off, I want to credit Janine O’Malley for finding Suzanne Kaufman. In case you don’t know, most authors don’t pick the illustrator, the editors do. When Janine emailed me Suzanne’s rendition of the candy-striped leafhopper, I couldn’t believe my luck. Suzanne’s vibrant, detailed rendition of the leafhopper was more beautiful and accurate than I could have ever imagined. Janine continued to make superb decisions that created the best book possible. ​My excitement didn’t stop with seeing Suzanne’s artwork though. It continued because she reached out to me through social media which is unusual. Many authors don’t have any contact with the illustrator of the book. One of the changes that occurred as a result of this contact, which I didn’t mention in the previous blogpost, was the type of bugbane featured in 100 Bugs! Originally, I had included a bugbane with green leaves Actaea americana, but Suzanne wanted to feature Actaea simplex because the purplish leaves complemented the other colors in the composition.

​The best part of collaborating with Suzanne was having the opportunity to meet her last summer when my family traveled out to Seattle. The four of us met Suzanne for lunch, and she showed me her sketchbook for 100 Bugs! which was amazing. Then, she gave me an amazing gift—original artwork featuring the characters in the book.

"The Collaboration Process" by Melissa Stoller

As a picture book author, I write words that eventually will be paired with illustrations, creating a whole book. Since I’m not an illustrator, my vision is only one part of the finished process. A certain amount of trust is required to believe that the publisher, editor, and/or art director will create an extraordinary partnership between author and illustrator. With the debut of SCARLET’S MAGIC PAINTBRUSH, I couldn’t be happier collaborating with my incredible illustrator, Sandie Sonke (www.SandieSonkeIllustration.com), under the expert guidance of our editor and art director, Mira Reisberg, and our publisher, Callie Metler-Smith.
 
While learning the craft of writing for children, I had always practiced the idea of leaving room for the illustrator. When I saw the illustrations and text of SCARLET together for the first time, I truly understood what that meant. During the editing process after I saw the illustrations, I streamlined the text by cutting words that weren’t necessary. My text became tighter in response to the images I saw appearing next to the words. For example, in an early draft, I had included the line, “Tears ran down her cheeks.” But since Sandie showed emotion in her illustration, this line was redundant. As the collaborative dance continued, the story grew stronger. And my ideas plus Sandie’s concepts turned into one creative vision.
 
It’s amazing to see the artwork of my debut picture book. The book was inspired by the thought of a girl with a magic paintbrush. I didn’t know what that girl would look like and of course I couldn’t have contemplated all the lovely details that Sandie has included in her work. The finished book is a true melding of art and text, producing a seamless and cohesive whole. I hope that children who read this story will enjoy the themes of creativity and escaping perfectionism. And of course I hope they love the magic that emanates from each word and illustration!

"My Inspiration" by Melissa Stoller

I’m happy to be on the #Epic18 blog today talking about the inspiration for my debut picture book, SCARLET’S MAGIC PAINTBRUSH (illustrated by Sandie Sonke, www.SandieSonkeIllustration.com).
 
My inspiration story starts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, one of my favorite places in the world. I live in NYC, and visit the Met often to attend art history lectures and to immerse myself in the incredible collection. The Impressionist galleries are always the highlight of my visit. One day a few years ago, while standing in front of a Monet painting, I thought to myself, “I wonder what it would be like to have a magic paintbrush and paint like Monet.” I couldn’t get that thought out of my head. What if I had such a magic brush? What would I paint with it? Would I love painting perfect pictures with this magic brush? And what would happen if I lost the brush? Would my creativity disappear?
 
I wrote these thoughts in my writing journal. And then I let them simmer in my mind for a while. Eventually a story took shape. After much revision, I sent the draft to my trusty critique partners. And I revised some more. I also workshopped the story and received more critiques. And I continued revising.
 
A few years later, in September 2018, I attended an SCBWI conference in Texas, where I met my publisher from Clear Fork Publishing, Callie Metler-Smith. I was already working with Callie on my chapter book, THE ENCHANTED SNOW GLOBE COLLECTION: RETURN TO CONEY ISLAND. I had discovered that Callie loved art history and the Impressionists as well, and we spent a day at the Kimbell Art Museum. I talked with Callie about my SCARLET manuscript, she loved the idea, and we signed a contract shortly after!

And here’s the best part: a few weeks ago, when Callie was in New York City for Book Explo, we visited the Metropolitan Museum together. I showed her my favorite Impressionist works, and we took photos in front of the Monet paintings that inspired my idea of a little girl with a magic paintbrush. I know that whenever I visit the Met, I will always be grateful that the beautiful artwork inspired me to write what is now my debut picture book.

Where do writers find ideas? All around us! The idea for my forthcoming picture book took over my brain as I was in the middle of writing an utterly unrelated biography.

In the fall of 2013, I got serious about my long-term plan of writing books for children. I focused on nonfiction picture books. That same time, we moved out of our house in town and into a new home in the country next to a beautiful hayfield. As the months passed, in between bouts of research and writing a pair of picture book biographies, I watched the beauty of the change of seasons around me.
In winter, the landscape was covered with a blanket of white. Snowshoeing across the hayfield, I spotted the footprints and snow tunnels of various critters making their homes in, on, and under the snow: foxes and mice and owls and more. In spring, the snow melted and the squashed brown grass emerged in the mud. In a surprisingly quick transformation, that dead-looking ground cover greened up, the birds arrived, and the field filled with tall grasses waving in the warm breezes.

​When the grass grew high enough, on a dry and sunny summer day, it was time to hay. I found the haymaking process fascinating—and charming. First, the big farm tractor pulled the giant mowers that cut broad swathes up and down the field and left the long grasses flat on the ground. Next came the whirring tedders, which "wuffled" the cut grass to aerate it and facilitate drying. When the hay was dry enough, the tractor pulled the big hay rake up and down the field to form long windrows—piles of cut grass running the length of the field. And finally, the baler arrived to roll up the windrows, creating neat bundles out of the loose hay. Mower, tedder, baler, hay! The process had an air of magic to it – making hay was storing summer's grasses so they'd feed the animals all winter long. The rhythms of all these machines seeped into my mind, and I started to hear these lines running around in my head:

"Listen and I'll tell the tale/of storing summer in a bale." 

At first, I thought I would write it all down in a poem. It soon became clear, though, that this story wanted to be a book—a rhyming picture book. Many people in my area (including the kids) are involved in haying and know all about it. But I realized that in most of the country, people aren't familiar with what hay is or how it's made. I researched children's books and couldn't find any about haymaking. And so I decided to write one. My book would be informational, and include the facts about hay—because, after all, I'm a nonfiction writer. But I invented a young narrator to tell the story of how we make hay.​

Now, with the help of the beautiful art of master illustrator Joe Cepeda, my farmgirl narrator and her mother will soon come to life on the page. I am excited to bring Hey, Hey, HAY! from my country hayfield to kids near and far.

"Our Favorite Illustrations" by Jessie Oliveros and Dana Wulfekotte

Jessie's thoughts:
Dana and I picked our favorite illustrations but truthfully, THE REMEMBER BALLOONS has 40 pages of my favorites. However, I do have a favorite, favorite. At first, I was hesitant to share it because then it wouldn't be a surprise. But I also want you to read the book, and if nothing has convinced you yet, then Dana’s genius will. 

This spring when I visited the S&S offices and sat around a table with Dana; Art Director Lucy, Editorial Assistant Alyza, and Cheerleader Husband, I said to Lucy, “the three-panel spread is my favorite” and she said, “it’s because Dana is … an animator.”

​Dana's thoughts:
Usually when I start working on sketches for a manuscript, I have to read it a few times before I get a sense of how I want to approach the illustrations. But this particular image popped into my head almost immediately when I got to this part in the story.
 
I have a background in animation and comics, so I wanted to draw this spread as if it were a storyboard or a 3-panel comic. I think when you can see how James is almost able to grab the balloon but then loses it completely, it has a lot more impact than if it were just a single image. Many times, when I visualize a story in my head, I imagine the characters in motion, so part of my process is figuring out how to simplify that into still images on the page.

Jessie's thoughts:
​Dana's history with animation has added such movement and LIFE to these pictures. In this particular illustration, she really shows her animator’s spirit with the three panels and James’ movement across the page as he chases Grandpa’s balloon. I never would have dreamt of conveying it this way! The way Dana breaks up the text and adds these natural yet dramatic pauses. The desperation of James when he can’t catch it and Grandpa, in all his sweetness, as he plods on, unaware that his balloon has flown away. It's beautiful.

Dana's thoughts:
This is one of my favorite spreads because the silver balloon holds a special shared memory between James and his grandpa. It reminded me of the memories I shared with my grandfather that were just between the two of us. One of the things that I loved about Jessie’s manuscript is that even though it deals with a heavy subject, there are still moments of joy and lightness that balance it out without sugar-coating the story.
 
In the beginning and end of the book, I drew James’ grandpa in a rocking chair on the porch, which I imagined would be his favorite spot to sit. My own grandfather would always be in his recliner whenever we came to visit. Also, I live in NYC where nice porches are a real luxury, so maybe I’m just trying to live vicariously through this character.
 
Jessie's thoughts:
In my April post, you'll have read a few words about the silver balloon. There is a beautiful spread with the memory inside the silver balloon, but you'll have to wait for that! But look! James and Grandpa share this silver balloon memory. The pride in James’ face, the kindness and love in Grandpa’s, and OH MY GOSH Dana invented a dog and gave him one balloon which is so funny, I want to laugh every time I see it. Because what dog can hold onto more than one memory at a time? I really just want to cozy up on that porch with the three of them and listen to Grandpa and James. (And I totally dig the front porch, too. My grandpa had a front porch that I loved.)

I have to say right off that I don’t know how I would have made the journey to publication without the generous kidlit writing community. So many people have helped me in so many ways. So, what’s been the most helpful?
 
Writing – Top 3
  • First and foremost, critique groups are essential. The group must be honest and able to see your strengths and weaknesses, encouraging you along the way. Groups grow and change over time as a result of experiences, and you have to be able to take yourself out of a group that is not meeting your needs and seek out or form one that will benefit you and the others. One of the best ways to find like-writing people is through online courses because you’ve all chosen a direction. And…as you become a better writer, you are better able to critique others. And…as you critique others, you learn.
 
  • I’ve taken several wonderful courses online, but, as my skills improved, I found that a workshop format was much more valuable for me – actually working with pros in small groups. Kristen Fulton’s WOW Retreat was a very worthwhile investment for me, but unfortunately is no longer scheduled. At that retreat, I was able to get what I consider now to be most important after polishing a manuscript…
 
  • Editor critiques. I’ve learned that editors look at a manuscript differently than authors do. They have a more holistic view and are also looking with a marketing eye. Kid Lit College occasionally provides “Critique and Chat” opportunities at a reasonable price. When you’re paying for a critique, I think you have to be brutally honest – and patient - with yourself as to whether this manuscript is close to ready because most writers don’t want to pay for multiple critiques on a single manuscript.
 
Subbing
  • Submitting to agents and editors is a huge challenge. The Facebook groups and websites for Sub It Club and Kid Lit 411 have a tremendous amount of valuable information. In this endeavor, keeping informed, reading lots of articles, and asking questions of other writers has been most helpful.
 
Overall, it’s important to “know thyself.” As I mentioned in another blog post, you have to be able to assess where you’re at and recognize your needs, to leave behind what is not pushing you forward and reach for the opportunities that will take you further. It’s hard to justify paying a lot of money for events when you’re not making any. Take advantage of inexpensive courses until they don’t help you anymore. Then consider a leap that might push you to the next level, maybe out of your comfort zone. Most of all, join the writing community because, as with most things in life, it’s our peers that are the best guides. Reach out and take part. And when you’re ready, share your experience.

"​My Favorite Illustration" by Andi Diehn

I have zero artistic talent. I mean, I'm not so bad at stick figures, but anything beyond that? Forget it. So the idea that an artist can create these pictures that are meaningful, beautiful, and fun blows my mind.
 
My favorite illustration from my series of nonfiction picture books is the first one that Hui Li did for us. I am extremely lucky that I also work as an editor for the publishing house (Nomad Press) that published my books, so I got to be a part of every single step of the process, from concept to illustrator search to editing to checking final proofs. And I'm pretty sure my absolutely favorite moment in this entire process was when the team took a look at the dozens of entries we received from our call for an illustrator.
 
While many of these illustrations were truly gorgeous, one stood out. It was a spread of two kids watching out a window as a woman walked by with her dog. Red cheeks, button noses, and an adorable dog, a loud radio—four of us from the design and editorial teams stood at the design studio table for half an hour to point out new elements we kept spotting. It was the kind of picture that kept drawing you in, that you could look at for a week and still discover something new. It was filled with motion and color and energy.
 
There was really no contest.
 
And Hui kept impressing us, all the way through the illustrating process.
 
But with all of the illustrations she did across four books (!) it's that first one that makes me smile every time. Because that's when the book was truly born.

"My Favorite Illustrations" by Melissa Stoller

I absolutely love the artwork in my debut picture book, SCARLET’S MAGIC PAINTBRUSH. My illustrator, Sandie Sonke (http://www.sandiesonkeillustration.com) expanded on the essence of the story with her beautiful illustrations. Sandie truly understood my vision, and exceeded my expectations. I always thought that the magic of a picture book occurs when the pictures meet the words, and now I know this is true. When I first saw the illustration that became the cover, I stared with tears in my eyes. I keep a photo of the cover on my phone and peek at it quite often!
 
Here are two of the inside illustrations that I particularly love:

The first page spread introduces the story. Sandie shows Scarlet, with her red hair and flower wreath, holding the magic paintbrush. Scarlet’s expression is full of joy. The brush radiates its own distinct personality thanks to Sandie’s depiction. On the opposite page, Sandie shows paintings of a princess, unicorn, and fairy. The color palette Sandie chose is soft and vibrant. And Sandie’s placement of Scarlet’s pet dog here on this first spread and throughout the story is an extra visual interest that young readers will enjoy.
 
I am also fond of this second spread. Here, Sandie depicts the moments after Scarlet loses her magic paintbrush. Readers will notice Scarlet’s dejected expression. Even the dog is hiding under the table. I hope that kids will be able to relate to this experience of losing something important to them. Also, I was delighted to see the cat clock hanging on the wall. I had the exact same clock hanging in my room when I was a little girl. I know that whenever I open the book to this page I will smile.

“Who Knew History Could Be Such Fun?!” By Beth Anderson

With an amazing illustrator like Elizabeth Baddeley, it’s hard to choose a favorite illustration!
 
From sketches to proofs to F&G, the whole process was new for me. What fun to see the story go from my imagination to something much grander! The illustrations are bursting with life, humor, and historical detail. Ben and Noah are captivating, and Elizabeth’s creative surprises depicting spelling issues are delightful.
 
So how do I choose? Each illustration is endearing in its own way, but I have to admit to some favorites that just blew me away - because of the amazing creativity, or the energy, or the details that support the text and provide context. I don’t want to share my favorite at the end – I’d rather leave it for you to explore and discover.
 
But just because you took the time to read this, I’ll share one in the middle that I find totally irresistible. It’s jam-packed—full of energy and internal conflict (what’s more fun than that?) and subtle humorous details for those with a patient and keen eye. This basic scene of Noah Webster at his desk appears several times in the book, but is different each time. As much as I’d love to point out all the features of this illustration that I adore, I’ll ZIP IT and leave it to you…..
